Liquid Waterproofing Systems: Acrylic

In a previous article, we explored one liquid waterproofing application: Bitumen Waterproofing.

This article explores acrylic waterproofing, another liquid waterproofing application.

Acrylic Waterproofing Applications aim to permanently waterproof new or existing roofs with low slopes and complicated flashings. The process, explained simply, entails fabric placed between several layers of acrylic-based waterproofing paint coatings achieving a strong yet flexible membrane that requires minimal maintenance. Acrylic Waterproofing can also be applied to parapets, flashings, ridge caps and around skylights.

Although the result presents a solution that can withstand high water pressure, high temperatures and movement to accommodate the structure, it is best to apply acrylic waterproofing during the drier months of the year. This gives the application time to dry completely and form tight seal.

The process begins with cleaning the area as oil or dirt will prevent the solution from sticking to the surface. Waterproofing Specialists will sweep, scrub or pressure wash to clean the area, followed by sanding, grinding, filling and patching the area to prime and prepare for the application.

A base coat of the acrylic paint is applied to the area and then, the SBP (Stich Bonded Polyester) membrane is embedded. This often entails overlapping sheets until the entire area is covered. At least three coats are required thereafter, applying a top coat of the finish colour. Once the top coat is dry, additional coats may be applied to accomplish thickness.

The features of this application vary far and wide.

Firstly, the acrylic waterproofing application is climate friendly and responds well to intense heat as well as blistering cold weather. This application can withstand harsh sun rays and is unaffected by rain, hail or snow conditions.

This application is material friendly too, bonding to almost any material it is applied too: wood, metal or concrete.

Acrylic waterproofing is regarded as cost-effective, making it a popular selection by home and business owners once recommended.

Most importantly, the acrylic waterproofing solution is conscious of the environment and avoids using harmful or toxic components as a water-base coating.

This application also presents a long-term solution with minimal upkeep required in order to extend its span of protection.
